7/21/85

Up and off to more of 4,600 foot climb from Belden. The PCT never seems to let up. Hiking well early, coffee buzzing away. Drizzling on me throughout the night, morning, but no serious rain.

Find Keith taking down tent about two miles up. Hike on, pass Poison Spring. Keith passes me on ridge. We decide to break for lunch at Cold Spring. More hiking through logged forests.

Lost in meadow despite book’s warning. Cows clank way. I go back  for trail, not bushwhack like Keith. Find Keith down from the spring. Eat fast lunch, then off. Up to some views, then Humboldt Peak. Drop after some nice volcanic rocks shots to Humboldt Summit. Talk with an older couple as breaking. They’re fascinated, leave me with their leftovers. Also encounter a guy about to hike up.

On way down ridge, meet nature type, but hurry on to agreed-upon spot on saddle above Carter Meadows. Easy hiking, nice rocks. Then a climb over ridge, up and downing as energy lags.

Finally make trail junction and Keith’s tent in the path. Drop, no tent, I use Keith’s water, munch leftovers, dinner. Easy to sleep. 23 miles, as we try to get to a meeting with our friend Dave, which calls for a 20-mile-a-day pace for 11 days.
