Journey Day 97 | PCT Day 97
7/22/85
Up and down to weak creek for only water ‘til Soldier Creek. Get to fork, pay back for last night’s agua. Then we’re off. Keith first. Hike up immediately to near Butt Mountain’s summit. Forested. Occasional views of clearcuts. Then drop miles to Spring Creek where Keith’s about done with a break.
We agree to make the North Fork of the Feather River for another 23 miler. Onward I go down through different privately owned segments, each signed. Then across one road to Highway 36 as it gets hot. Dry hike up to Stover Spring, a delightful spot. See deer on the way, up, a group of five near a spring running in a pack. Take a break at spring, munch two Butterfingers, finish graham crackers. Douse head, get water, off again.
Crossing area with chaparral when my shoulder strap snaps. From spring, down and tired, hike miles to the river. Feeling weak when spy Lassen shrouded in clouds through rain. Spirits up!
Make it downhill, across bridge to site. Keith there in tent. I prepare dinner quickly, Munch, raise tent, but sleep outside where I feel comfortable. Got wet but just from tree sprinkling. A few bugs, but that’s nature for you.
