Budding: 3 Years Off On the Trail and other Adventures

Hi, I’m Larry Budd.

What started as a journey for an inexperienced backpacker turned into an epic adventure. From 1985 to 1987, I hiked about 8,000 miles, completing what is now known as the Triple Crown of American long-distance hiking.

  • Pacific Crest Trail (1985)

  • Appalachian Trail (1986)

  • Continental Divide Trail (1987)

A third of a century later, I am back and refocused on telling the story, determining its place in adventure travel history, as well as our connection to nature and wildlife - now and hopefully forever. You can also find links to my other work as a journalist, as well as my Backpacker Magazine piece. I live in Lebanon, Ohio.

Can you prove me wrong?

Read my illustrated journal entries to see if you think it qualifies as a Triple Crown hike.
