Journey Day 290 | AT Day 113
7/19/86
I start down to the lake without Jack and Zarathustra, then push on up to Baker Peak with great views of a marble quarry and other environs. Pass shelters, cross Big Branch, a nice stream. Jack catches up, we take a long break on a rock by the stream. I read Thoreau. Then we cross the road, meet day hikers, hit Little Rock Pond, stop for a break. It’s beautiful.
We talk with fishermen, John Christine, caretakers, others. Eat big, swim to a rock in the pond. Dive off. Meet day hikers from Massachusetts and New York at the rocks, swim back in cold water.
Talk more with fisherman Frank Brevoart, Frank Jr. and Karl Chapman. They invite us to camp. We hang out, head down. Dark hits, can’t find the trail. I decide to wait as Jack heads back up as weather threatens. Flash lights show, we all get to the cabin. A man’s place with the guys walking around in underwear. Orderly but austere. We drink cheap wine, eat, talk late, crash.
