Caretakers added to the ambiance as we hiked through Vermont.

Up slow, hung over. Jack and I get ready, hike out to the store, eat day-old pastries; the local ice cream, Wilcox. Hitch, catch a ride with a guy from the Quality who’s to be married. Back on the trail with Zarathustra. Good climb up Bromley Mountain. Long break, sleep, meet a Connecticut couple on the tower, hike down then up Styles Peak, Peru Peak. Stop at the shelter and eat. A neurologist from Franconia drags in. We talk. Jay Woodworth, the Griffith Lake area caretaker, comes up for a spirited conversation. We crash.
