Journey Day 287 | AT Day 110
7/16/86
We drop down to a road and hike three miles as the weather clears. We meet workers who tell us we’re going the wrong way. We hike, then catch a ride back. Only cover two miles by noon. This time we push down the right road, up Stratton Mountain for great views after a climb. We watch a helicopter drop beam to a nearby site for a Volvo Tennis Match, then descend to Stratton Pond around logging. Talk with Jan the pond caretaker, then push on passing other hikers. Tired as we hit Spruce Peak, first meeting Zarathustra, the Citizen of the Future, Robert Chase, the Chemical King of Dunedin, Fla. Also meet Dwayne Allen, a Quaker from Apodaca, Fla., eating cold to save on food weight. My feet are burnt by the day’s hike. We talk and crash.
