Journey Day 262 | AT Day 85
6/14/86
Awakened by cars that interrupted my sleep all night, I shower, eat breakfast prepared by proprietress Helen Carbaugh. Then up the road and up the hill.
Meet Matt Weinstone, Jim Springer, up from Philly. After a long cut in the woods, possibly from a fire, I leave them and hike to the Windsor Furnace area, take a break at the shelter.
On up to Pulpit Rock, White Rock, then the Pinnacles, where I talk with church kids and adult leaders.
Then down to Gold Spring, where I meet a former hiker who convinces me to push on to Allentown. Easy road down after rocks all day.
Cross Eckville road, decide against a new hostel, hike through a hawk sanctuary, push up a rocky climb and meet the Houghtons, George and Alan, 9, from Clifton, N.J., who are hiking sections of the trail. Push on, take a break at Dan's Pulpit. Enjoy a register left by Doc Hank.
Finish a very rocky hike to the shelter. Arrive dead on my feet, meet over-nighters on their way in. Brief conversation. They crash, I eat two dinners, rock to my solar radio awhile. What a day!
