Up real early with little sleep. Hike hard up ridge through woods. Meet Don Deboussiere. Talk with him and his girlfriend. He gives me wine. Sir Bobalot appears, we push on.

Breaking on opposite sides of Virginia 607, hike on over, good talk, finally hit Rod Hollow. Nice shelter, although fly ridden. Trail shower, eat update. drink vino with Bobalot. A tough afternoon starts out hot with one up and down ridge after another. Turn ankle on a downhill, lay sprawled in the dirt and leaf bits left by gypsy moth caterpillars.  Catch up to Bobalot at a creek. Take a break, then up again. A tough, hot climb to a road. Decide to wimp out at road, find wild strawberries at roadside, quickly munch. Then hike past government installation known to locals as the “Underground White House.” Hike down 601, tired, break. It seems so far to go. Walking on when a van stops and we catch ride down to a hostel where we find Dave Blair, Jim Roy Sumney and his dog B.D. (for Brown Dog) from Florida, John Boone of North Carolina, others. Shower, talk.  Caretaker shows up. Call home, eat and crash in a clean bed.
