I hiked out early intent on a big hiking day.

Hike out early, intent on big day. Rain and clouds make everything soggy. See little except plentiful deer. I find a note from Bill Prescott, the Christian Hiker, who went off the trail back around Damascus after a 51-mile day. He’s back on the trail.

Also I start a grouse nest uprising along the trail. I hike to the Loft Mountain park development after temptation overcomes me. I end up with coffee, chocolate milk and cheese. Hike on to Pineview Shelter, where I meet Keith or Ken “Wolfman” Giant, a nice guy and alcoholic from Fort Wayne, Indiana on his first backpack trip. We eat, talk, crash.
