Lokking down on Virginia from the Appalachian Trail.

Lokking down on Virginia from the Appalachian Trail.

5/17/86

From nice Brown Mountain Shelter, out early, intent on Montebello. Catch Michael P. on climb to Bald Knob. Push up to nice bald called Cole Mountain. Pass southbounders from New Jersey. Short break, then push on, make Greasy Spring after one false stop at wrong road. Another short break, then on to Seely-Woodworth Shelter. Meet a big Boy Scout group from Lynchburg. Leave Michael P. with them. Mark Carroll catches me and we walk down to Fish Hatchery Road. Pass hatchery, then with directions we’re quickly in Montebello. Easy Va. miles!

Check out 1889 shingle-making machine in action, then on into town. Enjoying a burger, shake and fries when Jack shows up. Head for the laundry and showers. Stash pack in laundry room, call Debbie, old friend from BG. Nice to talk to female prospect. Deluge outside, I walk back with goodies. Eat in laundry as the rain continues. Mark, Jack crash. I write, crash in laundry. Late night interruption, so I pitch tent in dark. Drunks interrupt my crash pad. Crash again in tent.
