Push down Roan. Great balds. Poor water at break. Photos off Humpback, balds. Eat last grapefruit on break. Then down to Apple House Shelter. Long break, read register. Over road, more climbs, hot and thirsty. Stop in nice pasture, take water from harmless-looking stream, turns out to be cowfield.

Long break with ramps, meet Stan and Linda Brooks, from N.H. Talk, hike on, walk across private land, roads through rhododendrum to trail to Don Nelan Shelter. Eat planning to go on. But Spartans, aka Slackpackers, appear and we head up to the shelter. Eat more and crash.
