Freezing rain and snow shortened breaks in Northern Washington.

Freezing rain and snow shortened breaks in Northern Washington.

10/1/85 (written 10/5/85 at tent rail camp)

Rain during night keeps me in dry tent as day dawns. So get late start. Mud, lethargy slow further.

I slog down to where Jeff has camped. A guy passes me as I drop rain gear. 11 a.m., only five miles covered.

Stackhouse and I climb out from Cady Pass. He burns out, recent leg injury obviously painful. I push on, around to Lake Sally Ann. Pass a couple before Indian Pass as enter Glacier Peak Wilderness.

Short break, then on up long, wet, cloudy White Pass. In a cloud, hike long to Red Pass. Drop down muddy, rocky path to meet Joseph, a nutty physicist. He talks my ear off as I pitch my tent as dark comes. A World War II participant, he's well traveled. Paranoid, 61, what a trip.
