Journey Day 122 | PCT Day 122
8/16/85
Up early, I finally get J.L. We both look forward to meeting. Laundry, organize for departures. Easy days ahead until meet, hike with J.L. Then a race to the border.
Bid Dan farewell, hike away from nice stay. Down to deli for one more civilized meal – Swiss cheese and broccoli omelet no less.
Hit market Keith suggested. Talk with hobo who says he was a hiker in the past. Walk down Main Street, crowded with tourists, sidewalk sale. Hard to get through with pack. Finally other side of town. Drop pack, but no luck hitchhiking. Move, still no luck. Hitch from bus stop until bus comes. Takes me to I-5.
Walk down highway, try to hitch, but cars passing too fast. So back up to exit ramp. Still no luck until I solicit ride in from two guys in a pick-up. Drop me at exit. Get water from Callahan’s, deserted in the afternoon. Hiking back to underpass where trail starts (hiked erroneously two days ago), when meet man who knows my quest. We talk, I hike on. Up to Pilot Road, but markings are slim and none. I hike up a ways, stop, look for trail. No luck, keep hiking up road, against guidebook’s orders. See a worn temporary marker on a tree. Keep on. Finally find junction or beginning of actual trail. First marker since the highway!
Hike up, take break. Onward. No roads, all hiking through forests on ridges. No supplement, which may have changes. Nothing spectacular. Pilot Rock somewhat interesting. Hot hiking!
Finally make spring area where I put it down.
Ridiculous sign warns “Water not tested for Safe Drinking.” But tap remains. CYA, USFS. Bed down, read some “Black Elk Speaks.” Eat big meal. Crash…
