At times, it was like hiking in the clouds. Others, the sky only partially obscured Mt. Shasta.

7/30/85

Stuff wet bag, gear, head out to Deer Creek in a cloud. No views (Keith later says were great). Make creek, take long break customary with Sauer/Budd team.

Weather clears, hike along creeks. But trail a mess. Trees down, soaked pushing through wet overgrowth. Several miscues, shortly lost. Back on trail, head down to McCloud River Bridge for break. Man on bridge as we drop gear, eat. Then on, get water from Fitzhugh Gulch. Hike back up as storm clouds build. Trying to make miles to meet Dave, but weather threatening.

Climbing hard, looking for tarpable spot. Come upon arrows from Jeff, down ridge as rain starts. Good tarp set-up over branch, but holely tarp. Rain pelts all night. I’m wet. Not much good sleep.
