Up even earlier, I pass on breakfast, pass Jeff, still in his tent. hike past lake, spillway, up and out of park. Climb along ridge to Rock Creek. Find Eric. He leaves, I eat big breakfast, pleased with miles so early.

From here, more climbs along a forested ridge. Seems to go slowly. Very hot! Lose way, luckily realize it. Find way back, come upon Jeff lunching. Push on to Peavine Creek.

Hard hike to dry creek. Take guidebook’s suggestion. Follow road north. Lost, each road a dead-end. Water low, losing time. Castella deadline out of the question. Finally head back. Down to road, when hear Jeff. He’s found water, though it’s not marked here. We fill up, treat, eat dinner. I’m bushed, relieved to be back on the trail.

Up Red Mountain ridge. More logging, dense vegetation. Dragging badly after toils while lost. I creep up to spot on rocks looking at Shasta, other mountains before it. Repair a new blister, give up on today. Update journal as sound drops, night falls. Crash…
