Journey Day 99 | PCT Day 99
7/24/85
Up with the sun, hike out, expecting to catch Keith. Don’t and hike all the way to Old Station without drinking any of my iodined water. Pause at Beaver Flat Junction, then on down trail to PCT register for break.
Before register at Park boundary, pass fresh fire scene. Charred wood and charcoal lingering. Break for fruit roll-up, last chocolate at register. Then down around Badger Mountain.
Photos of the Lassen area as I drop to town. Many deer as I push to town along trail, then road through woods, then chaparral. See more of Lassen than ever, then say goodbye out loud.
Down old road, through plantation of trees. See man, deer. Leave trail, follow road through plantation to Twin Bridges, past campgrounds, campers, people, cars. Make 89 after eyeing deer eyeing me across creek. Down 89 to post office. Join Keith under a tree. No Jansport equipment, but everything else I needed.
Relax, eat, drink, open mail. Charlie’s Zen letter, Mom, Grama, plus tent and boxes from Mom and Sandi. Call Jansport, set up pack deal too late, but better than never. Also talk with Mom, JL, who will join me in Oregon.
Boxes back into post office for the night. After trying to hitch, we hike down to Uncle Grunts for a lackluster meal. As finishing, find Jeff grabbing my ankle. He and Eric join us, I get potato. Outside we talk with California forest people. They give us a ride up to post office vicinity. Make camp in the woods, just beyond post office. Eric went on.
Keith sad about his dog dying. We crash. I put up new tent in the dark with some difficulty after an ant invasion.
