Journey Day 457 | CDT Day 120

“The weather was looking really bad, horse hunter passes, the turns back,” I wrote on the 456th day of my hike in 1987.

10/12/87

Resume jeep road walk through high meadows, come out on main road, see Tommy and Billy again. We b.s, etc., they drive me to the intersection and we say goodbye again. It's a hot morning. Soon I spot the others ahead and catch them at break. Hike up over the ridge, nice views back through the pass by the reservoir. Break at the top, talk with same person, then drop down to spring for lunch as skies begin to cloud.

Leave ahead of the others, stay ahead, hiking up the Cochepeta Creek Valley into the Los Garitas Wilderness. Pass hunters with a circus tent, around a ridge past a ranch, up a creek toward San Luis Peak. Weather looking really bad, horse hunter passes, then turns back. I settle for a spot up next to the creek with a view ahead to what lies in store. Only a smattering of rain.
