Journey Day 415 | CDT Day 78

Wyoming desolation with distant peaks.

8/31/87

Field workers' early rising sets me off, but I lay in own bed past time the others have gone. Down to breakfast No. 2. Get mail, box at post office, but still no waistbelt. Repack in front, no one even asks what we're doing. Back inside, send mail, extra nine pounds of food, maps, journal, book, to Jeff, letters and a post card. Down to the gas station, call Mom, talk with Way's secretary. Back to the grocery (run by school kids through a teacher or parent at the register). Minimal offers other than p.b. and j. Munch six chocolate on chocolate donuts on the way back, then to the cafe where we eat again, sit for beers in adjoining bar before hiking back out. Photos of dying town's symbols, then to an apartment complex until done with letters, a good one to Julie. Convince group to hike it. We're halfway burning up when finally a considerate local picks us up, carries too far, back to the spot after see the McIntosh Open Pit from defunct? Western Nuclear Uranium Mining. Up road in dying, but significant heat, past mines, down to dry creekbed, camp beneath willows near new cowshit on the doorstep. Hawks in the area. Coyotes yelp loudly into the early morning.
