Journey Day 414 | CDT Day 77

Desolate Wyoming, 1987.

8/30/87

Up quickly, eat while packing. Leave Sweetwater River spot, hike road, rejoin Adkinses. Just a roadwalk, checking out Dishpan Butte, etc. Old horse only other living thing around as we push to the road to Jeffrey City. Hot wait for naught. So we begin the hot walk to the gas station along the river, where another road joins. I read as I walk. Just as we're reaching intersection development, a young teacher of jazz from Wyoming Community College picks us up.

So we're soon at a cafe for a fair breakfast omelet. Town nearly dead and it tells on the people. Finish, head to motel, try to call the postmaster on a Sunday.

Nice lady, good room, others shower first, I finish Magic Journey before bath and shower. Down to the other diner (also a bar) run by an older, single woman. Listen to "You're an Asshole" repeatedly on the jukebox, with customers singing along. Slow service, fair chicken-fried steak dinner. Back after calling the Washington Post and Bruce Lahman, make plans to hike with him near his home in Colorado. Back to the room for Masterpiece Theatre, crash with lights and the TV on.
