Up early. Eat, then leave southbounders and climb over Roundtop Mountain and hike past the East and West Carry Ponds after a nap at the East Carry beach. Hike through bogs on Bates Ridge, descend along a brook to Pierce Pond, where Maxine sits bummed. We talk, Mark, a biker from N.Y., shows up.

I head for Harrison's Camp, rap, buy food, then head back to the Pierce Pond Lean-to, eat a big dinner. Drink coffee around the fire, look at stars from the rocks in front of this great lean-to.
