Journey Day 321 | AT Day 144
8/19/86
Sleep late in quiet tranquility, alone at the Avery shelter. Eat excellent muffins, then hike over Avery Peak in the clouds, damp and wind. Glad to be back below tree line. Hike a trail relocation, slow over Little Bigelow with occasional views of Flagstaff Lake. Enjoy blueberries for too long. Push past Flagstaff Lake, hit the Jerome Brook Lean-to as a Deadhead from GA is on break. We talk Jansport D-2 packs, other hikers, the Kennebec River ford. I decide to stop for the night.
He leaves. I’m all spread out for another night alone in a shelter when young brothers from Maryland, Gary from NH-MA show up southbound. More talk, dinner. We crash on uncomfortable “baseball bat” floor.
