Jim Roy Sumney peers off Weverton Cliffs.

From Weverton Camp, up early with Dave, Jim Roy and Brown Dog, we hike off the canal, up Weverton Cliffs to great views. We push on, take our next break on some rocks, then hike down to Gaplands State Park. We talk with day hikers and a ranger, then push up and over to Dahlgren Camp. Shower, visit The Inn, where we drink with the bartender, then hike up over the highway, past the first Washington Monument to a shelter.
This is my first meeting with Leonard Adkins, a frequent A.T. hiker with whom I'd hike the Continental Divide Trail a year later. We crash after setting up and eating in the dark.
