Journey Day 146 | PCT Day 146
9/9/85
Up early, gear reasonably dry. Break camp with little food. Hike up as get wet quick in cloud layer. No rain!
Break near Indian Springs, revitalize for big push. Make shortcut after some rock walking. Down steep trail, saves big miles. A nice, warming challenge. Hike to 1st waterfall along Eagle Creek Trail. Very wet still, verdant surroundings.
Pass several falls, shoot photos with unlikely success. Hike on past 7 ½ mile camp, few camped there. Tunnel Falls beautiful.
Eat burger, fries, shake at drive in. Talk with lady clerks past closing as I eat a big basket of fries. Back to rainy outside, into park in the dark without flashlight. Down to shelter. It’s Curt Jackson of the California Boys, who we hiked with in Southern California several months ago.
We B.S. also with Jim from British Columbia. Keith and Jeff are at dinner. Keith and Jeff return. Reunion. Fireside rap, relax. One by one we trail off as rain beats leaky shelter . Fire drying socks, gear hanging. I can’t sleep, so I update my journal and set for manana stores.
I’ve made it across Oregon. 2,100 miles down, 500 tough ones to go, especially if the weather stays bad. Though I don’t feel too excited, I’m apparently up. Keith and I agreed the weather has been good fortune so far. Knock on wood!
