Journey Day 108 | PCT Day 108
8/2/85
Up pretty early for slack day, I begin by writing. Back to warm, dry bag. Up for good, organize food, change over pack hardware from Jansport.
Minyard shows me good 3 Sisters Wilderness spots. They leave. Keith leaves. I write in journal. Latest Big Catastrophe: No guidebook from Sandi, so I must copy the pages. Days out so far: 14 in April, 31 in May, 28 in June, 31 in July=104.
Milton Kenney, 75, logger, ballplayer. Lost his wife as they prepared to begin fulfilling their dreams by traveling. Now his purpose is to serve PCT hikers.
Milt returns to the site at Castle Crags State Park for PCT hikers. Takes Mike and me to town again. I copy pages of the guidebook, Mike and Milt do laundry. Get boots.
Girl in Laundromat gives Mike a hug and kiss. Dunsmuir appears to be a dying town, railroad economy. One more Barnbuster after hitting the local supermarket. Despite a $20 loan from Jeff, down to $2 leaving town. Milt jumpy to get back, but takes us everywhere we want to go. Drops me at a store where we find Father Andrew and Chuck. Talk, intros, Milt and Mike leave. No one home to talk to on the telephone. Talk with a guy, kid at the store.
So up the ridge, cross country, to campsite. Munch, drink beer, more writing. Father Andrew and Chuck show up. All camping at the same small campsite. We sit around, talk, drink beer and wine. Crash late…
