Journey Day 451 | CDT Day 114

Posing with Joy Winters, a childhood friend, after visiting her home near the Continental Divide Trail.

10/6/87

Arise and eat, drink coffee, talk with their friend John, a guy wronged and down on his luck. He's been around a lot of grizzlies and is convinced my Glacier bear encounter was with a grizzly. Eventually Joy's up. John goes to work on Stan's dream cabin. We eat a massive sausage and pancake breakfast, talk old times and new. They may get a second camp in Moab.

Preparing to head to dam for a look at the Sawatch, when Curt emerges. We all head down, identify peaks. Sawatch is larger than I thought. They treat me to eight candy bars.

Back to camp. I pack, then they carry me to check out the eight-level cabin. Then up to Tin Cup Pass, where we part. It was a nice visit, but the good weather pushes me on.

Hike down, missing turn-off as I talk with four-wheeler riders. So I decide to walk into St. Elmo. Pass the ghost town, back up the valley. Camp off the road, crash...

Remains of St. Elmo, Colorado, October 1987.
