Journey Day 432 | CDT Day 95

Hiking near Arapaho Basin in September 1987.

9/17/87

Frosted tent, ice on fly, frost inside, wet bag, a bit frozen. Very cold morning, so I cook before going. Slowly arise, hike up creekbed, catch road and hike down, dirt biker in truck passes me. Walk past Flat Lake to where road crosses Hyannis Peak Trail. Easy hike, excellent spring. Walk in forest, up along Arapaho Creek. Dirt biker comes up, legal? there and in North Park. Still nice to talk, he drives on. I push up a good climb to the final Arapaho trickle beneath Hyannis. Long lunch break on mac and cheese, etc. Dirt biker again, more talk, advice on trail, apparently rad motocross just occurred. Rest of the climb, then on open Divide. Excellent views in all directions, especially to the Never Summers. Basically an easy hike, some problems, but keep to the Divide, enjoy views, battle gravity's pull off the crest. Descend back to forest, hard to follow, especially near the pass, but down to the road.

Hunters pass on logged ridge, no shed in sight, so down hill to crossing, up 3/10ths to where the road is closed by a side creek. Climb up and camp. Eat in dark.
