Journey Day 387 | CDT Day 50
8/2/87
Great night's sleep in soft bed between clean sheets. Slowly arise to meet today's uncertainties. Get it together, take a soapless bath, talk with hotel owners, visiting friends from Australia. Hike to restaurant where I'm told to leave pack outside. Steak and eggs while Bonnie Stoddard, "local newshound," shoddily interviews us. Good breakfast!
After photo session, back out in hot sun, Leonard unsure how to remedy photo ills. No rides to Idyho Falls, so over to bar by back door Legion Bar/Cafe after hitting Conoco for supplements.
A couple beers, the jukebox plays some country favorites. Our moods improve, we talk with the couple of proprietors who've come from Bakersfield, CA. Talk about fishing, really tempting after freeze-dried fare.
Big meal served by Texas gal. Kind of buzzed, leave for park after long talk with Jack Mallory in between peach pie ala mode. May see him yet. Also learn Mrs. Trowbridge died. A nice woman, dignified despite her bad state. No talk with Mom, leave three messages. Short nap at local park, call Eric Galllandt on impulse on the way out. He'll meet me at Mack's Inn. Something to look forward to.
Out to scorching I-15. No luck again, convince others easily, station begging's the way. But no luck for more than an hour. Meet a Danish tourist, watched a horse battle owner and trailer. Losing hope when new Suburban with middle-aged Utah couple pulls in. Laurie goes over, he says yes, she says no. After a conference, we're in a nice air-conditioned ride heading for the pass. Nice talk before we arrive.
Monida a ghost town in the truest sense. Nothing commercial, but more traffic than I-15. Photos, then hike road up to the Divide after bogus spring, water OK, but cows everywhere. Hike fence line, gradual climb to great spot looking back at the Red Conglomerates, Garfield Peak, Lima Reservoir in the saddle.
Rule out pitching, enjoy sunset, views, into bag as day's heat is gone quickly into the cloudless atmosphere. Chilly, so should be comfortable in bag. Nighty night.
