Journey Day 340 | CDT Day 3
6/14/87
Very chilled I moved about at Fifty Mountain Camp. Another ramen breakfast, then down with the tents and off, in rain jacket, polypro shirt and gloves.
Still in snow, we found our way down into the valley, only to climb up the next ridge through snowy terrain, the trail buried beneath drifts. We found our way up to a nice ridge, a walk through alpine flora. Yellow glacier lilies and white American Beauty predominated both sides of the trail through these first narrow meadows, streams running all through. It is now very hot, so I return my new sunglasses.
A nice long break at big meadow with view of the Lewis Range and Highline Trail not legal to hike. We're on the Flat Top Mountain Trail, at that mountain's lengthy ridge. But eventually we move on, first looking for the trail, then back to well-marked forest trail. Soon we're at Flat Top Campsite, a beautiful spot along a creek with small falls. I raise tent without fly, nap for 1 1/2 hours. Miss group lunch/laundry, follow suit upon awakening. Enjoy beautiful stream, setting and wash self and clothes.
Back to group site, I wander across to spring and ridge while waiting in vain for shorts to dry. Also enjoy Odyssey, which everyone else in the group read as a youngster.
Eat group dinner, hang food in a rush as rain threatens, but play pigs game with Leonard and Carl before retreating for short-lived storm. Asleep after reading.
