Journey Day 306 | AT Day 129

The cog railroad chugs lower on Mt. Washington.

8/4/86

Another food orgy at breakfast. More talk too. Then bid other hikers adios and get to work cleaning the beds as it clears from the valley up. Eat again for free, leave with free bread and thoughts of the beauties of the hut.

Climb up Mt. Washington, again pass Bill and Martha Denton from Oak Ridge, Tenn., Steve Ahern, a New Hampshire auditor.  Pick up food drop, head down to room, freaked out by perception I’d lost my hat. Meet Son of Billygoat, a 15-year-old hiker who’d already done most of the A.T. Back upstairs, do mail, talk to friend and set up meeting with PCT pal Keith Jones. Check out the summit, hike on in high winds to escape “tourons.”

Meet Dean Bailey and Birchstick, hike awhile. Leave to go over Mt. Jefferson at summit. Meet Sir Bobalot and Jennifer. Talk, leave them and drop off the A.T. on Randolph Mountain Club trails to Crag Camp. Talk with a couple, the caretaker and crash.
